If I was running a team of any size, I’d start the year off like this
My FIVE holistic leadership approach for 2025
Use them all or try one each month in 2025
1- meeting etiquette reset - call it a productivity hack or just a plain January inefficiency detox, remove old habits and lazy useless meetings with ground rules you all agree upon. This can include ending 10 mins early to take a walk or meditate, turning off cameras on Fridays or hosting conference room brainstorms once a week
2- objective role clarity - take the time to help everyone know the object of their role. Give your team a fighting chance to impress you before subjectivity hits next December. Set the rules of the game we are all playing. Role clarity is a driver of satisfaction and retention
3- what can you stop doing - leaders who do not take things off of their teammates’ plates is never going to be liked or long for their leadership job. Saying no or stopping tasks allows your people to find room to get the high impact work done We can’t do it all and without your help everyone is ineffective
4- rules for humanizing the work- a great team culture is part grind and part motivating everyone to row in one direction quickly. Most of us can muddle through the work but finding a set time to talk about the weekend or personal stretch goals should have its place and time. Know which type of meeting is for chatting and which meetings are for work only. For those with social anxiety knowing that most meetings don’t have chit chat is a game changer
5-communicate your team’s impact strategy - As leaders move faster and faster you still need to communicate the importance of their work, the why behind decisions and how you get from from point a to point b.
My Best idea:
6- offer office hours like a professor- once or twice a month open your calendar for 60-90 minutes for messages, calls or quick slacks to help you be efficient with your time. This stops (or attempts) the constant pings all week long. You have to keep this time sacred!
